in the 1990’s i attended a class where we learned how to dye fabric in the microwave
it took me until this century (!) to experiment more fully with this technique –
above, from left to right – cotton wadding, cotton fabric, synthetic fabric
i wanted to use these newly dyed fabrics to make a layered wallhanging with torn strips and hand stitching
i called it dark night of the soul, after a song by loreena mckennitt
i tried to arrange and grade the colours so they blended from light to dark
the synthetic fabrics added a subtle shine and more muted colour range, reminding me of moonlight
i tore the wadding to give the bottom edge a ragged look
the vertical strips represent silhouettes or shadows
